Dr Emily McAvan is an academic and writer based in Melbourne, Australia. Her research centres on the intersection between the secular and the religious, focusing on the aesthetic, gendered and sexual implications of the sacred. Her first book The Postmodern Sacred: Popular Culture and Spirituality in the Science Fiction, Fantasy and Urban Fantasy Genres was published by McFarland in 2012. Currently, she teaches literature and creative writing at Victoria University. Her writing has appeared in the Guardian, Billboard magazine, Overland, SBS, and elsewhere. She is a published poet.
