Dr Emily McAvan is an Australian literary and cultural theorist. Her research centres on the intersection between the secular and the religious, focusing on the aesthetic, gendered and sexual implications of the sacred. Her first book The Postmodern Sacred: Popular Culture and Spirituality in the Science Fiction, Fantasy and Urban Fantasy Genres was published by McFarland in 2012. Her work on religion and culture has appeared in journals such as Literature & Theology, The Bible and Critical Theory, and The Journal of Postcolonial Writing, while her journalism has appeared in the Guardian, Billboard magazine, Overland, SBS, and elsewhere. She is a published poet.
